intro: there are mild rape scenes in alot of the chapters. If you are easily offended by these things, please donnt read.
When Dad died, I thought the world would end. Everything seemed to remind me of his voice. "I love you Gemma" an old chair would say to me. A dusty vase would chide playfully "Hold your fork correctly Gemma or I might be forced to send you to a finishing school!" Rooms he often visited would seem to sigh as I entered to touch things. But not Mom. After Dad died, she started drinking. She lost her job and we lost the house. we were skipping from town to town as she met men. I stayed in the hotel. "I'll be back in a few hours Gemma. Order room service if you get hungry." But it wasnt hours. it was days. Weeks at a time that she'd be gone. But that all changed when we met James. To make a long story short, we ended up moving into his home. He and Mom were married about 3 months later.

chapter 1: Mom had finnally gotten a job. She whispered in my ear as she left "Help him, would you? He's had a long day" She kissed my forhead and ran out the door. I was washing the dishes. James came up behind me. "Hey James i was just-" He grabbed my hips and pulled me into him. I laughed nervously and tried to elbow him off of me. I yelped as he squeezed harder. "James!Stop!" When he wouldn't let go, I opened my mouth to scream. "Scream all you want. there's nobody around for at least a mile in every direction." I remember it all so clearly-though I wish I didn't. Being shoved onto the hard counter. His hands sliding off my clothes and holding me down at the same time. Pain. Fear. His hands moving closer and closer to my throat with each thrust. Then nothing.

chapter 2: Darren. Darren was perfect. While mom's relationship with James matured, so did Darren and mine. He was so gentle. he always asked me if I wanted to do something. He never pushed me to do anyhting. But i couldn't feel altogether happy. James repeated his attacks every night now for over a month. Sometimes I could barely walk into school. I wore turtle-neck sweaters and thick bracelets to hide where he had been. One day, Darren and I were outside school, sharing ice cream and laughing. He asked me why I wore sweaters in the middle of summer. My mood darkened "I..uh..I like them..." Darren shrugged it off, but watched me carefully. I was shaking. The thought of going home tonight made me too sick to finish my ice cream. Some of it dripped onto my sleeve. Darren chuckled. "Clumsy. Let me get that." I tried to grab the napkin from him, but I was too late. he saw my wrist. The dark purple marks couldnt be missed. Darrens eyes grew serious. "What happened?" I looked down. "Gemma?" He took my arm. Carefully, though, like I was a porcelain doll. He lead me around to the back of the school. No one was there. "Gemma? Please tell me what happened." I told him everything. By the time I was finished, I was cradled in his arms, my words coming out in hiccuping sobs. "Oh God. Gemma. Why didn't you tell anyone?" I looked up at him. "Darren. I Can't. My mother is so happy. for the first time since my father died, she's really happy. I couldn't take that from her." Darren sighed. I had stopped crying. the rise and fall of his chest lulled me into a translike state, in between reality of dreams.

chapter 4: That night, Darren walked me home. He insisted on going all the way up to my room. James was in the sitting room. when we came in, he turned around in his chair. I wouldn't look at Darren, but I could feel his eyes on me. "Hurry it up." JAmes's voice came from the sitting room. I still kept my eyes down. We got into my bedroom. "Darren, go. now. Please." "But..." I interupted him. "You need to leave. If he figures out that I told you..." A tear trickled down my face. He was trying to help, and I was pushing him away. But he couldn't do anything for me. Not yet. Darren Kissed my forehead. I felt him sigh. He left. When I heard the door slam, my heart started to beat faster. "You told him." "Told him what?" James slammed me against a wall. "N..n..no, I, I didn't." He came closer to me. Suddenly, he grabbed my arm and twisted it. But he didnt stop. He twisted my arm in almost a whole circle. "Don't Lie to me Gemma." James raised me up by my neck. I felt him punching me in the stomach. Hard. I couldnt take it anymore. I fought him. I slid away. I didnt know how long this could last, but I knew I had Darren now. James finnally caught up to me. He dragged me up the stairs and threw me down on the bed. "If you won't hold still, then I'll make you." I tried to hide the rope burns, but Darren found them. I was having trouble breathing and I couldnt walk on my right foot. In the hospital waiting room, the air seemed like a ton of bricks falling on my chest. I was dizzy. I couldnt think of why I would be, only that it had something to do with a metal bar. "Gemma?" a nurse called, Her voice trilling through the silence. Darren helped me up. Once the doctor came into the room, Darren gave me a look. "So.....Gemma? What happened here?" "I fell down the stairs." I blurted out before Darren could say anything. Darren held my hand, but wouldnt look at me in the car on our way out. "I can't believe you. That was your one chance and you...you just..." I looked out the window. "Please don't yell at me." I whispered. He let go of my hand. I didn't want this to happen. I grasped his hand. "I'm sorry." Darren looked at me. "No. Gemma. Don't you ever say that you're sorry for what this monster is doing to you."
